Q: Which weight-loss medications can be prescribed?

Your doctor can consider GLP-1 medications and several pills. Which one, if any, is decided with you in the chat: GLP-1s: Wegovy, Zepbound, Saxenda, Ozempic, Mounjaro, Rybelsus; Pills: bupropion, metformin, topiramate, naltrexone; Some are approved for weight loss; others are prescribed off-label when a doctor decides they fit.

Q: Do I qualify for a GLP-1?

GLP-1s for weight loss are approved for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or sleep apnea. Your doctor goes through your history with you and makes the call.

Q: How much weight can I expect to lose?

In the manufacturers' clinical trials, people on the highest doses of today's GLP-1s lost about 15% to 20% of their body weight over a year, alongside changes to diet and activity. Results vary, and most people notice change within the first few months.

Q: Is the medication included in the visit?

No. The visit is one flat price; the medication is paid to your pharmacy. The pills are generic and inexpensive at most pharmacies. Brand-name GLP-1 pricing varies, and if you have insurance you can use it at the pharmacy.

Q: What are the side effects?

The common ones with GLP-1s are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, headache and fatigue, usually early on and when the dose goes up. Do not use a GLP-1 if you or a family member have had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2. Your doctor talks through the risks before prescribing.

Q: I already take a weight-loss medication. Can you refill it?

Often, yes. Tell the doctor what you take and the dose. If it is right for you, the refill goes to your pharmacy, up to a 30-day supply.
